Detail of Specification

Definition:
Specification is the part of contract document which sets out -

  • The scope of this project
  • Detail of the nature and quality of material and workmanship
  • General Information of the project
  • Facilities will be provided at site to engineers and other contractors
  • Information such as availability of electricity, gas, water etc are required for execution of the project
  • Means of access to the site
  • Special irresponsibility to the contractors which are not included in condition

  • Information may be gathered from
  • Previous Specification
  • Site survey investigation
  • Employers requirement
  • Trader Category
  • International Standards (BSTI, ACI, ASCII)
  • Trading Drawing

How to Write Specification
  • Wording of specification must have following properties 
  1. Clear - It must be clear and contains no ambiguity.
  2. Correct - Specification convey correctness
  3. Concise - It must be concise so that everything can be described within fewest words
  • It must be definite and easy to understand
  • It must be brief, easy and avoid repetition

Characteristics of Good Specification
  • Specification must be brief
  • Avoid long sentence
  • Avoid long articles
  • Use well known and acceptable abbreviation
  • Don't say 'either', 'neither', 'and', 'etc' and use 'said' as adjective
